Padre Pio and the Stigmata

In September 1918, while praying before a crucifix in the choir loft of his monastery church, Padre Pio reportedly received the visible wounds of Christ—known as the stigmata. The wounds appeared on his hands, feet, and side and would remain with him for approximately fifty years.
News of the mysterious wounds spread rapidly throughout Italy and beyond. Physicians, clergy, and investigators examined Padre Pio over the years, while thousands of pilgrims traveled to San Giovanni Rotondo seeking prayer, guidance, and healing.
For many believers, the stigmata became a powerful symbol of Padre Pio’s devotion to Christ's suffering and his lifelong dedication to prayer, sacrifice, and service to others.
